H&S Color Opposite Approach Colorful Desk

In this entry to my “Power of Color” series, we are looking at the use of color from an opposite approach.

Sometimes you have a client that gives you a wonderfully fun, cherished purchase to work with that can inspire a whole room and it’s color.  My client had purchased this desk, chair and mirror for his little girl.

I fell in love with it myself and built her room around the essence of it’s whimsical nature.

The purple seemed to hug and nurture everything that we placed into her room.  I designed her fairly tale trundle bed and night stand in tiger maple that offered a soft compliment to all of the other wonderful items in her room.  The soft buttery light yellow of her carpeting also complimented the other materials and colors in the room.
Since the room was full of object life and interest, in this case the correct choice was one continuous wall color.

Art & Wall Color Hammer & Schmidt Design Inc Interior Architecture and DesignContinuing the “Power of Color” series, this time we are looking at art and wall color.

I feel that the art you display is an expression of who you are, what you like and what intrigues you.

In this article I demonstrate how to compliment art with wall color.  Here are examples of 2 color studies based on 2 pieces of art from my last project in NYC.

Of course all of this has to respect and have a relationship with everything else that is going on in the interior.  Art should not be a random act left to stand on it own.
It is important to select a wall color which will complement a favorite piece of art, making it more powerful.  Choose a color which draws out of the art and floods the wall around it.  Choosing a wall color can be intimidating but placing it on a blank wall is the easiest way to find a color to draw out of the art and blend with the interior.
Art 2 White BackgroundIn this first example I am showing what a boring white wall does for the art…in my opinion nothing,  and it does not draw your attention and then move your focus towards it to study it’s beauty.
If you have a large gallery wall full of varied art then how you select the wall color becomes more about contrast.
Large galleries and museums use this quite frequently to display the art of the old masters where you are drawn in to observe the subject matter on a deeply pigmented wall.  In contrast to this, in a modern art gallery they use the stark white wall approach especially when the extra large canvases are making a bold color statement on their own.

Continuing my “Power of Color” series, this time we are looking at color pops and color blocking. I have been using this terminology and methodology throughout my career , and now it seems to be the current rage in the fashion industry.

color blocking

Color blocking.  This is my interpretation of how I use it in creating an interior. I created an architectural element to open the space up that wraps into the transition hallway to create more room for tall cabinetry and to create a striking architectural detail to draw you into the kitchen and gather around the island.

I used bold color, contrasting and textural materials coupled with accent lighting to create this dramatic statement. As my client hated pendent lighting, I repeated the essence of this element on the ceiling plane to light and mimic the “L” shaped eating area again using color to offer bold contrast.

This illustrates my passion for color blocking with large areas of contrasting bold colors, materials and textures. It is my profound belief that every detail is as important as the next. Everything and every choice is fundamentally important to the final outcome and success of the project.

Be bold, be wise, be thoughtfully daring………..

Color pops.  This is also a way to work with color. Bring the drama in with contrast and accent with color in either pops of color in furniture, accessories, rugs or…there are endless combinations or approaches. That is one of the most fundamental and powerful reasons I am in love with creating interiors.
color pops and blocking
In this kitchen I used bold contrast with the cabinetry and walls and then threw in the unexpected  and playful green chairs…why not!
I opened the passage between the kitchen and  the new open concept living and dining area repeating the playfulness.

In this same project I custom designed two bold area rugs to bring the room together and orchestrate the visual movement. Also the  goal was to offer stark contrast to the neutral white of the leather sofa and play again with the pop pumpkin of the statement rocking chair by making sure the essence of that color was in the rug sending your eyes and emotions on a wonderful
dance throughout the room.   The sofa’s scatter pillows again played with the colors in the rugs.
more color pops on a mody gray wall
Every wall was a different color, recalling the playfulness of the bold accents in a muted sophistication.  The painting contractor wanted to kill me as there were 10 wall color variations
in this open concept living and dining area.  I wanted  to articulate the interior architecture with color blocking to create visual intrigue and texture.

power of color interior decoratingOur next few articles are going to be dedicated to the use of color in interior design.  I have been a proponent of this for years; the power of color, how color brings such life and energy into a space, and how people connect on an emotional level to it without even realizing it is happening.

Presented here are a few photos from my latest project in NYC.  I think people often go to neutral colors on walls because they are afraid or just do not know how to layer them together to make your eyes dance around a room. For me, color has a progression and rhythm, bringing such wonderful dynamics to space. You can dramatically and economically change your space with just a can  of paint.

Color selection must be appealing in order to compliment and enhance everything in a room.  An odd wall color selected simply because you like it, without taking everything into consideration, can look both jarring and out of place, thus evoking a negative emotion.  So color is powerful in both a positive and negative way, and you have to understand the fundamentals to make a good selection and move forward boldly, knowing it will all make sense once it is done and everything is in place.

If you have the right type of room, layering color creates added glamour, drama, and fun!
